Ivan Matchett is one of 6 members of Alabama’s #1 ranked 2008 signing class not on campus. That is set to change according to this article in the Mobile Press Register.
The other 5 members of the class who are not on campus are:
Sam Burnthall - #43 - FS - 6-2 - 185 lbs. - Decatur, AL - Decatur HS - 1 Varsity Letter
One of a number of sleeper prospects signed by Mike Shula and his staff, Sam played a role on special teams in 2006, logging 9 tackles in 11 games as a freshman. That playing time dropped significantly in 2007, with appearances in only 3 games.
Baron Huber - #40 - LB - 6-3 - 242 lbs. - Knoxville, TN - Powell HS - 2 Varsity Letters
Baron came to Alabama as a linebacker in the signing class of 2005. With Bama short on potential fullbacks, it took all of 2 days of practice in the fall for him to be moved to the offensive backfield. Continuing the trend of this off season, Baron will be trying to learn a new position.
Glen Coffee - #38 - RB - 6-2 - 197 lbs. - Fort Walton Beach, FL - Fort Walton Beach HS - 2 Varsity Letters
Glen is one of the more intriguing players on Alabama’s offense. He signed with Alabama in 2005 as the least heralded member of a running back class that included Mike Ford and Roy Upchurch, and then walked right onto campus and into the playing rotation. Whether it has been injury or suspension, so far there has seemingly always been something holding him back from following through on that early promise.
Eryk Anders - #32 - LB - 6-2 - 225 lbs - San Antonio, TX - Smithson Valley HS - 1 Varsity Letter
There are times that signing a guy very late in the recruiting process really pans out. Wallace Gilberry is a prime example of that, with Wallace not inking to play with Bama until the summer of 2003. Eryk Anders followed 2 years later, with his signing coming completely out of nowhere months after signing day. At the moment, that is where the similarities end.
Richard Hendrix has been selected by the Golden State Warriors with the 49th pick of the NBA Draft. Jay Bilas is presently highlighting his rebounding skills. He’s calling him “tough” and the graphics say he “Must Improve: Athleticism”. That always goes well.
The Warriors don’t seem a particularly good fit for Hendrix; in the first round, they selected Anthony Randolph - the 6′10″ forward from LSU. In addition to Randolph, the Warriors have the journeyman Austin Croshere and first year player Brandan Wright (of North Carolina) at the 4. Matt Barnes and Al Harrington are also on the roster as post players. It seems unlikely that Golden State will carry 6 players at power forward.
Croshere is an unrestricted free agent - they probably don’t bring him back. None of the other PF on this list are free agents. It will be tough for Hendrix to out fight Randolph and earn playing time on this team. I’m concerned that this isn’t a particularly great fit for Hendrix to see lots of playing time.
With all of the negative news regarding Jimmy Johns the last 2 days, we thought we’d share with you an article that will probably get lost in the shuffle regarding Alabama’s Ali Sharrief and the work he is doing with a local (Tuscaloosa) Elementary School.
We won’t do much of this - just linking to an article written somewhere else. But this pretty much speaks for itself, and speaks volumes about the character of one Alabama football player.
Javier Arenas - #28 - DB - 5-9 - 183 lbs. - Tampa, FL - Robinson HS - 2 Varsity Letters
There have been a lot of negative things said about former Bama head coach Mike Shula and his staff over the course of these player profiles, so let’s give credit where it is due – Javier Arenas was a true diamond in the rough, and the best job of finding a little recruited, but contributing player, done by Bama’s former staff.
Well, Jimmy Johns has made a lasting impression on the program in yet another way - we’ve vaulted to #1 in the Fulmer Cup standings at Every Day Should be Saturday. The Fulmer Cup awards points for general lawlessness, and the Jimmy Johns Crime Spree nets us 20 points.
It seems silly to address this made up (albeit humorous) “award”, but it is named for Phil Fulmer, so let’s dig a little deeper. Continue reading this post…
