OK, there's at least a 85% chance nothing of any import will ever come of this... BUT ESPN.com has just broken the following story. A man "representing" Cameron Newton told Mississippi State officials that it would take $180,000 for Newton to choose State. Starkville was getting a discount rate because of Coach Dan Mullen's ties to Newton - other were apparently willing to pay $200,000.

The initial source of this information to ESPN.com is former Bulldog John Bond. Hits on his full statement have broken the Clarion-Ledger site - at post time the link was unavailable. According to a Tweet from Sports Illustrated's Stuart Mandel, Auburn has confirmed that Newton is eligible to play.

If there's verifiable truth to this, it is a huge huge huge huge deal. If it has any legs, it's the biggest story of football season. We're motoring towards Louisiana tomorrow, so don't expect much in the way of updates on this from us. But we will be watching with interest.

Unbelievable.
