We’re off to Fayettenam (my nickname for Fayetteville) via Delta Airlines tomorrow around lunch. We’re hoping for a weekend full of good times and cooked pig - literally and figuratively.
We asked the kind folks at Razorback Expats (who do a really nice job covering the Hogs) to help us out with a little travel planning. They deferred to one of their commenters - Hog Blogger (since, as expats, they don’t get to Fayetteville as much as they’d like). Hog Blogger was nice enough to answer our queries:
1. What’s the landmark place you’ve got to try no matter what? In Tuscaloosa, it’s Dreamland ribs - where do Brent Musburger and company eat when they come to Fayetteville?
Everybody goes to Doe’s on Dickson. Best steak you’ll have in quite some time. Afterwards, you’ll leave with a full belly and an empty wallet.
2. What place flies under the radar? The place that’s great, and only the locals know about - and won’t be absolutely packed on Friday night before the game?
It doesn’t get any more hole-in-the-wall-y than Herman’s on College. It looks like a shack, but the three times I’ve been there, I’ve seen either coaches or local bigwigs chowing down. I recommend the ribs, but the steaks are also pretty decent.
3. Where do you have a beer and watch some football pre-game? Or, since we’re kicking off just after breakfast, post-game?
If you want to watch a game, and just have a beer, go to the brand-new Foghorns Wings & Chicken behind the baseball stadium. If you want a fantastic beer, go to Brewski’s on Dickson. They’ve got about 40 on tap, and it’s a pretty cool atmosphere. If there’s a game you have to see, they have some TV’s over the bar, but I wouldn’t recommend it for just watching football in general. The wings at Foghorns are the best in Fayetteville, though.
4. What’s the best place for a more laid-back great dinner Saturday night late?
For a more laid-back dinner, I can’t say enough good things about Penguin Ed’s BBQ on College, but that’s maybe a bit more of a lunch place. I have yet to eat BBQ anywhere that I think is better. I’d also suggest Noodles, it’s probably the best Italian in Fayetteville.

The only quarrel I have with these suggestions is my understanding that Herman’s is, in fact, a long wait on Friday night (we’ll see for ourselves soon enough).

Herman’s… I hate you guys for going without me. The ribs are huge and awesome. The steaks are huge and awesome. Have I mentioned yet that I hate you for going without me?
Just get the ribs as an appetizer to split at the table and then get a steak. The best of both worlds. And there will be a wait on Friday night.
