The Corner of Wire Road & Shug is an Auburn blog with a questionable color scheme and a penchant for calling us “SPUAT” (the meaning of the “SP” I’m lost on). It’s not a particularly interesting Auburn blog, and they’ve got some that are quite good. Auburn Tron, Joe Cribbs Car Wash, From the Bleachers, and the War Eagle Reader (pretty much the only time you’ll see those two words together here) are literate, interesting, and often funny (sometimes at Alabama’s expense - but if you can’t laugh at yourself…).

I’m frankly, not sure how found my way to this blog (which is at least well named). But somewhere, I linked to this post. The post - if you don’t want the orange to burn your eyes - is this video:

It has the heading “Where Was The Outrage Two Years Ago Over This?”.

Well, let’s run down the reasons for the lack of outrage.

First, this was one fight in 2006. I don’t recall any others. That doesn’t mean there weren’t any others, it just means means there was just one. In Auburn, this fall alone, there have been at least 37* fights.

Second, if Mike Shula was asked about it, I’m sure he didn’t say anything like “football is a fight. Every down is a fight. Every practice is a fight. Especially in August.” Another gem:

“I hope they’re in a foul mood,” he said. “That’s what football’s about. They’re not going to hurt anybody.”

Third, despite what Tuberville says, at least one player has been hurt. Marcus Jemison must not be “anybody”. He’s lost for the season. Auburn famously lost another member of their secondary a couple of weeks back when Deron Furr left the team after getting the “code red” treatment.

Fourth, it’s been written (by me in all fairness) that Tuberville at least tacitly condones this activity. In addition to being potentially harmful, it’s also just dumb. It’s cost Auburn 2 members of their secondary (Jemison certainly would played and probably started), and if Tuberville would be best served to come out stronger against it and actually try and stop it.

Finally, that 2006 Mike Shula led disaster of football team finished 6-7 with a sparkling 2-6 record in the SEC. There’s something to emulate.

* Hyperbole - not an actual estimate. Also, I tried, in vain, to work “little brother complex” into my ad hominem attacks on this other blog, but failed. Sorry.
