Corey Smith - #44 – K/P – 6-0 – 195 lbs. – Bunker Hill, WV - Musselman
Considered a dual threat kicker in high school, Corey Smith served as his team’s place kicker and punter. With Leigh Tiffin having locked down the place kicking duties this season, there was hope among Tide fans that Corey would be able to come in and compete for both punting duties and kick-off duties. When he enrolled in January the expectations grew.
Chance he’ll play in 2008: Not likely. Corey has struggled so far as a punter as returners P.J. Fitzgerald & Heath Thomas have improved. He’s not going to supplant Tiffin on field goal or extra point plays, so there is no reason to use a year eligibility. It can be a huge adjustment for kickers from the high school level to the college level, so a redshirt year is not necessarily a bad thing.
That wraps up our player profiles for the entire team. We’ll start our position by position profiles in the next couple of days as we build towards game week.
