The Daily Sentinel of Jackson County (Scottsboro, AL) ran an interesting interview piece with Saban about the state of the program. Saban had lots to say about the process and how important the fans are (his normal fare), but he went on to say that the fans, in some spots, had expectations that were just too high about our incoming class:
“It’s not fair,” Saban said, “let the guy create his own expectations.
“Now we think guys are going to go from the high school prom to the SEC and expect them to change the game. Some do, but it’s unfair to put those expectations on them.”
That sounds about right. Anyone who expects all 27 of these kids (including the 2 “back counters”) to be all SEC or help us beat Clemson by three touchdowns is deluding themselves. There’s no lack of folks who think that, and they’re not helping.
This is almost certainly condemned to be a bit of a rebuilding year - especially on defense where we’re looking awfully shallow up front (especially the linebackers). Unless all the pieces fall precisely into place (from a incoming player standpoint) a nine win season would be a remarkable accomplishment. Tide fans need to get used to that idea… for now.
