Ivan Matchett is one of 6 members of Alabama’s #1 ranked 2008 signing class not on campus. That is set to change according to this article in the Mobile Press Register.

The other 5 members of the class who are not on campus are:

Destin Hood - reportedly worked out for the Washington Nationals after being their 2nd round pick and wowed everyone. He hasn’t signed yet, but will. It is common for players to use their football scholarships as leverage with MLB teams. He will not be coming.

Melvin Ray - already signed his MLB contract with Dodgers, so he won’t be coming.

Kerry Murphy - is reportedly taking summer school classes to try and get his grades up. Our sources say that the chances are slim that he’ll be here.

Devonta Bolton - absolutely no word is available on his academic status. His HS coaches have sequestered him, refusing to allow interviews. That’s probably a bad sign as to where he stands, but good for his coaches for attempting to remove all distractions from Devonta as he attempts to get qualified.

Brandon Lewis - he is enrolling at a Junior College and will not be at Bama in the fall. (Thanks to rolltide_2007 for pointing out that I had omitted Brandon.)

So as things currently stand, Bama is at that magic number of 25. If either Murphy or Bolton (or both) do qualify, then something will have to give.

The other thing that could come into play here is the fact that the SEC is apparently going to begin to allow partial qualifiers. Cecil Hurt wrote about this in much better fashion than I could in this article in the Tuscaloosa News.
