Prince Hall - #21 - LB - 5-11 - 235 lbs. - Moreno Valley, CA - Moreno Valley HS - 2 Varsity Letters
There have been very few players in recent memory who have been more frustrating to watch than Prince Hall. For every great play there is seemingly a bad one. For every big hit there is a time when he has been grossly out of position. And for every great game played, there has been nearly one missed due to suspension. And at the moment he is still sitting on indefinite suspension from the Alabama football team.
He is in school for the summer, however, and is participating in workouts. He has been given a list of things that he must do in order to return to the team, and reports indicate that he is actively attempting to accomplish those things. Some reports also indicate that he might have gained weight – something that he could ill afford to do.
Still, having said all of that, linebacker is an absolute position of need for Alabama. Getting a guy who was a Freshman All-American back would certainly be a positive and might allow the linebacker position to become less of a glaring weakness.
It was expected through most of last season that Bama would move either Prince or Rolando McClain to the Will position, in an attempt to get their two best inside linebackers on the field together. Until Darren Mustin had to miss time due to injury, it didn’t happen. Was that because Mustin was that much better? Or did the coaches lack confidence in one of those 2 to play the Will?
2008 Prospectus: A month ago I would have said that there was no chance he’d be back. But then Nick Saban spoke publicly on the matter and it looks more likely that he will indeed be back a part of the team in the fall.
The absolute lack of depth at the linebacker position across the board tells me that he and McClain will not play the same position again. My guess is that Hall stays at the Mike and McClain moves to the Will, which allows Bama to use guys like Jimmy Johns, Cory Reamer & freshman Don’ta Hightower in completely different roles.
All of this could be a moot point, however, as it is likely that if Prince is back on the team, he will have an incredibly short leash. He has not, to this point, demonstrated an ability to remain out of the doghouse, and he won’t be given another chance.
