Alabama Senior Michael Thompson missed the cut this afternoon at the Master’s. But that’s not quite the whole story. Yes, Thompson did lose a bit down the stretch. He bogeyed three of the last four on his way to a back nine 39 and missing the cut by 3 strokes. He played an excellent round on Thursday, but sadly, couldn’t finish better than the cut line to make it to weekend play.

However, Thompson was sitting right at the cut line, looking at a birdie put that would have put him into the weekend if it held on 15. He grounded his club, and the combination of the afternoon breeze and the historically slick Augusta greens moved his ball a fraction of an inch. Thompson moved off his ball and rightly declared a penalty stroke - making the putt a chance for par. A rules official wandered over, concurred, and Thompson missed the par putt just barely.

In that moment though, he summoned the spirit of Bobby Jones - according to Golf Magazine, and made his name synonymous with class and sportsmanship. It was a remarkable call, exuding courage and class. Thompson knows he’ll be back one day at Augusta National, and he plans on showing up and having a clear conscience and the respect of his peers.

Congratulations Michael. You didn’t make the cut, but you earned the respect of the national media, your peers, and the public at large. You, sir are a class act.
