Usually here at UH we take a look past the box score and give some props to players who might not get the mention they deserve on Sportscenter. With this being a bye week, obviously there are no players to hype. With that being said, I think there are some teams and players (and coaches) out there that contributed to Bama’s success for the rest of the season (provided we take care of business on our end). Florida Gators Thanks to the Gators for taking the shine of LSU by “swamping” them 51-21 (get it swamping them?). Sure one might say it is a wake up call for the Tigers but I say it makes Bama’s trip to Death Valley not so intimidating. Florida rolled up almost 500 yards total offense against what was supposed to be the best defensive line in college football. The 265 yards rushing Tebow and company amassed tells me otherwise. Provided everything shakes out as it should, the Tide will be 9-0 going to Red Stick and it makes Saban’s first trip back not as daunting as it once did. Mack Brown Thank God Texas found a way to beat Oklahoma 45-35! Bob Stoops has won big games when he was supposed to before and Mack Brown hasn’t. I know, I know, the Rose Bowl and Vince Young blah, blah, blah. Now let me tell you a story about a blind squirrel and a nut. Some Bama fans were miffed that the Longhorns jumped Alabama for the top spot in the polls but I say nay, nay. I would rather have a Mack Brown coached team ahead of me any day. Texas, historically, doesn’t perform when the lights are bright. While Bob Stoops has laid some bowl game eggs in the past, I would much rather count on Texas to gag on their number one ranking the Sooners. Did I mention that Texas has to play a ticked off Missouri team this weekend? This leads me to… Mike Gundy Big win for the Oklahoma State Cowboys to up end Missouri. 28-23. Now Missouri has their loss out of the way before the Big 12 Championship game. But more important, anything that gets Coach Mike “I’M A MAN, I’M FORTY! COME AFTER ME!” Gundy some pub I am all for it. Some might say that the Cowboys beating Missouri might mean something BCS wise but I say that playing Texas, Texas Tech, and Oklahoma in their last five games will take send them to the Holiday Bowl were they belong. Bobby Petrino One half of the “jet gate” gang rolled up 416 yards of offense against the other in a grudge match for the ages. Surely, Tubby ran it up on Petrino. On no, The Hogs ran wild on that vaunted Tiger defense must to the chagrin of the Alabama Polytechnic Institute faithful. How sweet it was to watch the worst team in the SEC (no disrespect, Coach Croom) shoot themselves in the foot over and over again and still beat the Tigers. For all of Bama Nation, I say thank you Bobby Petrino! Mississippi State Thank you Bulldogs for making that Auburn loss to the Commodores look a little worse. And no, I am not opposed to kicking a man while he is down.
