Tony Franklin is out as Auburn's offensive coordinator, according to the Auburn Opelika News. The Dothan Eagle echoes this claim, but it looks like they're owned by the same folks - essentially the same report. Now, AL.com Auburn Blogger Charles Goldberg has it. It appears to be the truth. Goldberg includes this:
Tuberville said he will take a bigger role in plotting the course of the offense. Tuberville said he'll decide in the next day or so who will call the plays in Saturday's game against Arkansas.
What does it mean for our cross-state rivals?
  • It's a public relations disaster for Tommy Tuberville who was the ultimate "riverboat gambler" when he hired the then Troy offensive coordinator to run his offense on the Plains. Tuberville has notoriously run through coordinators like a hot knife through even hotter butter, and this is another mark against him in that column.
  • There's a chance it stains his credibility. I know, I know... be aghast that an Alabama blogger would impugn a coach's credibility, but Tuberville was steadfast on Sunday about letting Franklin turn it around.
  • Holy crap, is their recruiting screwed. The Tigers have all season long talked about how they're recruiting the athletes to play this offense. They have a ridiculously large number of recruits committed - lots of them two and three stars - who were "perfect" for the new system. Those kids are either going to get cut loose (which hurts Tuberville's long term credibility) or stay on and not run the spread (which hurts Auburn's medium term competitive situation). Either way, it's a disaster.
  • Saturday's game against Arkansas is now the biggest wild card of the weekend. Does Auburn come out running the wishbone and rack up 300 rushing yards against the Hogs? Do they keep at the spread? Do they bring back Al Borges (who still lives in Auburn)?
At the end of the day, the players had clearly lost confidence in the system. It was an inevitable event at season's end, but to sack the coordinator midseason is nearly unheard of. This is the craziest thing to come out of Auburn since Terry Bowden was canned in the middle of the 1998 season. We'll have more as this continues to play out.
