Nick Saban was fired up today. He opened with a salvo about day to day injury reports... has the Coach been reading the Bama Sports Report? Unlikely.
So, what did he say about injuries?
Every time a guy's in a black shirt, it's not news. It's like a 747 went down and everybody needs to know why. A black shirt means a guy is not having contact today for some physical reason.
Barrett Jones has had a bad shoulder all year long - he's worked though it and every now and again he's going to have a black shirt so he doesn't get contact - but don't ask me again.
I've been getting on people's ass all day today, and I'm ready to get on somebody's in here if y'all are ready to get with it.
So, naturally, the very first question was about the health of Terrence Cody. Saban says he's "coming along nicely." Cody is out for this weekend, and Saban hopes he'll return to full practice next week. If things continue on this path, "we feel like he'll have a chance [to play against LSU]".
Cody did do more "football work" today - including hitting the blocking sled a bit early in practice.
Barret Jones was in the black jersey today. He played sparingly in the first few games. If he doesn't play Saturday and there are no injuries late in the season, it seems a medical redshirt is a virtual certainty.
Saban was asked about the receivers (other than Julio Jones and Mike McCoy), and he has some notes on each player:
Earl Alexander has done a really good job for us this year.
Nikita Stover has started to come on and do some good things. He struggled a little bit early in the season, but hopefully he'll continue to make progress.
Darius Hanks is doing a better job on a consistent basis and hopefully maybe we'll see him play a little bit sometime in the future.
Will Oakley has done a nice job when we asked him to fill in. Had a big catch in the UT game - playing healthy, playing fast and more confident in what he's doing.
The young players like BJ Scott are making progress.
Mike McCoy is playing well coming back from his injury.
We need to continue to make progress in that group. We threw the ball better in the last game, and I think that's the consistency and the timing that we're developing and the confidence between the quarterback and the receivers and that's something we need to continue work on.
Finally, he was asked about his chest bump with Brandon Deaderick. No, it was not his first chest bump.
It's not the first time I've been excited and jumped up in the air, and I'm not going to evaluate how I act on the sidelines. I'm an emotional guy. Sometimes I chew them out too. I'm not going to give an explanation for that either.
It's what we do, man. If you're into what you do and you like it, you ought to try it sometime. Do something good! And feel good about it and want to to jump up and chest bump somebody!
I think I'm going to go chest bump Crump after this superb practice report.
The practices the balance of this week are closed. We'll be back with news as it happens.
