Though he has been retired from Alabama games for more than a decade, Simpson Pepper'svoice is dear to all Bama fans who had the pleasure of hearing him serve as the Tide's public address announcer.
Coach Pepper served as the PA announcer for all Bama games at both Bryant-Denny Stadium and Legion Field beginning in 1970. He had the pleasure of announcing arguably the greatest decade of college football for any team in history.
His deep, booming voice could be heard outside of both stadiums until he was replaced behind the mic by Tony Giles in 1997.
Simpson Pepper passed away today after having spent the past 2 weeks on a ventilator. He will be missed by all that had the pleasure of knowing him, and by all who associated game time with the sound of his voice.
